Surface Science Letters Crossover between terrace-diffusion and diffusion step-to-step on vicinal surfaces: scaling function and analytic approximations

چکیده
On equilibrium vicinal surfaces with mass transport dominated by terrace-diffusion (TD), there can be crossover from TD to diffusion step-to-step (DSS) behavior for fluctuation wavelength k large compared to the step separation ‘. We show that the temporal correlation function for 180 -out-of-phase fluctuations can be written as a function of a single dimensionless variable proportional to time=‘ and present an excellent, simple approximation for this scaling function. This formulation can be used to distinguish mass transport dominated by DSS versus evaporation–condensation (attachment–detachment) limited kinetics (for which the capillary-wave characteristic time s has the same k behavior as DSS). 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Step dynamics on vicinal surfaces using discrete interface models.
Fluctuations of a single step on a vicinal surface are investigated using a discrete model designed to go further in capturing atomistic effects than usually achieved with continuum models. Variants of the model to incorporate the following three types of adatom dynamics are studied: attachment-detachment; periphery (step-edge) diffusion; and terrace diffusion. The dynamic exponent z is determi...

We study theoretically the equilibrium fluctuations of steps on vicinal surfaces. From an analytical continuum description of the step edge, we find a single Langevin equation governing the motion of an isolated step around its equilibrium position that includes attachment/detachment of atoms, diffusion over the terrace, diffusion along the edge, and evaporation. We then extend this approach to...

We report on peculiar behaviors due to anisotropic terrace diffusion on step meandering on a vicinal surface. We find that anisotropy triggers tilted ripples. In addition, if the fast diffusion direction is perpendicular to the steps, the instability is moderate and coarsening is absent, while in the opposite case the instability is promoted, and interrupted coarsening may be observed. Strong e...
متن کاملElectron wave function at a vicinal surface: switch from terrace to step modulation.
The Cu(111) surface state has been mapped for vicinal surfaces with variable step densities by angle-resolved photoemission. Using tunable synchrotron radiation to vary the k dependence perpendicular to the surface, as well as the (k) dependence, we find a switch between two qualitatively different regimes at a miscut of 7 degrees (17 A terrace width). For larger miscut angles the step modulati...

Diffusion of atomic oxygen on a vicinal Pt111 surface induced by femtosecond laser pulses has been studied using optical second-harmonic generation as a sensitive in situ probe of the step coverage. Time-resolved studies of the hopping rate for step-terrace diffusion with a two-pulse correlation scheme reveal a time constant of 1.5 ps for the energy transfer from the electronic excitation of th...
